From enquiry to approval
Nine steps from your first contact to approval.
Foundations Care guides you through every one.
- Initial enquiry. You get in touch, or are referred by Child Safety, a support agency, or someone in your community (with your consent). We have a friendly first conversation about fostering.
- Information and exploration. We explain the types of foster care, what carers do, and what to expect during assessment, so you can decide if it suits you.
- Expression of interest. If fostering feels right, we invite you to complete an Expression of Interest and discuss the next steps.
- Training and preparation. You complete introductory training covering child development, trauma, and your responsibilities as a carer.
- Choosing a support agency. We explore your preferred support agency and the kinds of children you feel able to care for. Working with Child Safety’s Placement Services Unit, you will be matched with a suitable agency. (View North Queensland support agencies.)
- Foster care assessment. A qualified assessor completes a detailed assessment. With your consent, Child Safety and Blue Card Services conduct suitability and safety checks on you and your household.
- Recommendation and approval. Following assessment, a recommendation goes to the CSSC Manager, who makes the final approval decision.
- Handover to your chosen agency. Once approved, Foundations Care and Child Safety coordinate your referral and transition to your allocated support agency.
- Placement and ongoing support. Your support agency works alongside you, providing guidance, training, advocacy and support as you welcome children into your home.
